Read this review first then went onto several other sites. Was thinking 8 was a good score until I read elsewhere. It seems this review maybe a little hypercritical possibly due to love of the original game. Where things are perceived as flaws be Steven others see them as positives.

I don't see this as a bad thing as people interpret games and gameplay differently and it what makes us different as gamers. I think the score is justified by Steven's account of the game but there are other reviews that read differently and in a more positive light. Lots of 9's and 10'S at major sites!

Hmmm, this review suggests the game to be pretty much how I felt about the first Bioshock. It's gameplay is "okay", but the atmosphere and story pull you through it. I've not been overly hyped about it and that's mainly because I feel it's a shame that the game is fundamentally a shooter. Bioshock was fun for me when I was exploring and I found the actual gunplay to be a bit too clunky. If this game is even more heavily a shooter and the environments don't evolve too much, then I'm not really too interested in playing it. Sure the tale might be great. But I don't have hours of gaming to waste on a grind.

I know quite a few of the VG community have been looking forward to this. So I'll be interested to see their opinions as they play through it.

@Karlus
Leave the score comparisons for Metacritic ;P

No problem

In my opinion interpretation of a review is far more valuable than metacritic. However by your suggestion it makes this review seem like it has less weight as currently it's bottom of the pile on that site again. My comment was designed to stop the hate but hay ho you know best!

8/10 is a good score - an average game would/should be 5.

Having read the review *gasp* it sounds like a game I would like to play, so I will order it.

Sounds like the sort of review from somebody who didn't get on with the first Bioshock and yet they imply that they preferred Bioshock. So a little confusing.

I'm glad for the honest review. Really this is more or less what I expected - the story makes up for the gameplay being meh after a while.

The game looks really cool, but I'm not sure that it is $60 cool (or really more like $30 cool with the free copy of XCom on Steam...).

After a few more hours, I'd say 8 is MORE than fair. I'd probably give it a 7, myself. And that is after coming across an unexpected Cyndi Lauper musical cameo... Tongue I like the thematically-appropriate exploding barrels of fireworks, but... the tonics, upgrades, and special-effect clothings all just feel rather tacked-on.

Sky rails remain fantastic, though. But the could have been so much more open and the AI more reactive. It really does feel like wandering through a population of mannequins.
