The game began as a mod for Half-Life 2 developed as part of a research project at the University of Portsmouth, the version released boasts visuals constructed by Robert Briscoe, a former environment artist on Mirror's Edge.

Dear Esther is a ghost story, told in the first person. Rather than traditional gameplay, the focus here is on exploration, uncovering the mystery of a Hebridean island, of who you are and why you are there.
