Surely there must be a best game that has been made which will then be replaced when this to-be-made game arrives?

As much as I loved The Last Of Us, I feel it needs to pass the test of time before it can be a contender for best game ever made. It's too soon.

Great piece guys, although I think Brett has been hanging around Bratt too long if he is using phrases like "fussy old curmudgeon ". It does not seem like a Brett line at all!

@SLAMNDAN although your comment made me chuckle, I think it is slightly missing the point. The idea is to have a debate about something, rather than falling down on one side or the other.

I did start with "stroppy old bastard", but thought I'd clean it up a bit Smile

In terms of 'pure' game mechanics, rules, and strategies that are reliant on the medium itself, Tetris is pretty much it. For me, at least. But it's not my favourite game, by a long shot.

As with most people in the comments. My answer is NO.

I love this game, it's great. And it gets so many simple things right that other games don't even consider;

We have far too many cut and paste template games, where they first decide if its an open world/ or fps/ or 3rd person/ or rpg and then you build the story around it....

..whereas in the last of us, I can't say with 100% certainty what the approach was... Did they say 'we want visceral heads being smashed in lets making a zombie game!' or did they 'look at the story and themes lets make the gameplay reflect the narrative and build gameplay mechanics around that'.

When 90% of players see that torture scene ..they don't feel detached. They've been drawn into the world so much that they want in to happen. I haven't had an experience like that since the ending of 'the mist'. And it's also why the transitions between gameplay and cutscenes don't ruin the game...it's not only the acting and production values...it's the actually gameplay that makes the cutscenes better!

The transition from stealth to be seen...to evading alerted enemies is pretty impressive...especially for a game where that's not the main draw.

On the other hand, the survival mechanic is a semi- illusion, the enemy AI don't see friendly AI, the enemies are endless when you first give Ellie the gun until you give her a chance to shoot it, the part where you have to get seen by the armoured car took me out of the game because enemies I purposefully sneaked past instead of killing came back to haunt me as I triggered an unavoidable alert phase & the stupid grunt in the sniper nest tower, with spawning bad guys in nearby houses.

"Is The Last Of Us the best game ever made?"

Its whatever the individual playing it decides but i am sure we all agree on one thing that it is a great game.

@britishwolf Of cause the best game ever made exists.....

Even if there was only ten games ever made in the whole world and they were all pretty crap whatever the least crappiest is out of the ten would make it the best game ever made.
I think what you're trying to say is that the best is yet to come.
