Well I cant say i'm surprised TSW revenue is low, full-price game with a full-priced sub AND microtransactions? I dont have to be an economist to tell you that kind of business model is old hat and out-moded in this day and age. Especially on PCs.

The layoffs on the other hand are entirely expected imo. Takes a massive amount of people to produce an MMO but i'd imagine not even close to that to maintain and upgrade; Especially if you have built your application with upgrade and additional content in mind.

And if they plan on tweaking and upgrading for the foreseeable future rather than working on full-fledged expansion, then less staff in the interim makes sense. Which is also expected.

@Endless I really like the game and I very much prefer the sub model for MMOs. And since its item shop contains nothing but cosmetic items, and with the regular (promised) content updates I really don't mind supporting them.

I personally can't stand most of these F2P-cashshop models. Whenever a MMO adopt a F2P model, it usually end up being gimped to the point where it's unplayable without paying either for a sub, or paying multiple chunks of cash for content and perks, chunks, which usually end up adding up to more than a few months sub combined.

This news makes me sad Sad But I agree with Endless, I really couldn't see their model having any longevity. I guess now it's only a matter of time before this is F2P...

My problem with MMOs these days is that I'm absolutely not going to pay full price for a game AND THEN pay a monthly sub. When I was proper into MMOs before and during university you would pay £25 or less for an MMO retail box and £8-12 a month in sub. But my perception of value has altered drastically since my teen and early 20s. Now married and a father I cannot justify a monthly sub AND a full retail price for a game. Money is tight all around the world and to have such a high barrier to entry with an ongoing cost in todays market is something only an established brand with a huge following can dare to ask for imo.

TSW has it's pros and cons like everything and it's by no means a bad game, quite the opposite, but for me (and by the sounds of things, many people) an ongoing sub just doesnt seem worth it any more. Full price game, yes, there's a lot of content initially available and just for the single-player-in-a-multiplayer-space content alone it's easily worth the £30-40. But when the industry as a whole is moving away from such a heavy outlay and many other titles offer close to the same content, polish and gameplay for no monthly fee, then it's not surprising that people are a little hesitant to put their hands in their pocket.
