I think people regularly dismiss this possibility all too quickly. I'm not going to argue against figures, since they are what they are, but support still remains for the series, and obviously Jade, it's lead character. The first game just stopped. There was no real ending.
They could very easily take Jade, as she was in the previous game's conclusion, and transplant her somewhere else, and it would remain plausible. So BGE2 needn't be a continuation of that game that didn't sell too well, because everyone was (rightly) excited about PoP. Yes, it was originally concepted as a trilogy...Which trilogies do you know, that begin immediately following the events of the previous chapter? Take the core concept and continue with it. Clip out all the superfluous bits, and ensure it works within its new premise and setting.

Eh, voila, Master Chef, you have a Lara Croft-esque turn-around, and a very valid, relevant franchise to take forward, that's without unwanted baggage to constrain its scope!
