Microsoft files patent for achievements linked to TV, which could - you guessed it - 'increase advertising opportunities'.

Isn't this exactly what you said you didn't want to happen Dave in the podcast? For achievements to become marketing tools.

This might sound cool, but it does go some way to devalue achievements. And if you are the kind of person who will be watching TV more then playing games, pop ups like this could be annoying.

So that means, technically. you could never play a game and have a better Gamerscore than your friends? (assuming these Achievements add to your Gamerscore still, I guess).

Getting closer to that idea of Achievements for everything.

Next generation, the Xbox will attach to the toilet and you'll get an achievement for regular bowl movements (as long as you use the advertised cereal, of course) Grin

God, I hate all this. I mean, just really hate it.

My gamerscore is a source of pride, because it is just that - a Gamer Score. You know, for gaming. A mark of my achievements, and history, in gaming.

As someone with no interest in watching TV through their games console as opposed to their TV, or taking Skype calls, using Internet sodding Explorer or any of the other associated guff, it now feels like my score, a result of many hours of play, commitment and dedication over the years could just as easily have been achieved by sitting on my backside watching boxed sets of The Sopranos, or using Bing a pre-recquisite amount of times in a 24-hour period.

Top stuff.

I've never been a 'comment ranter' before. This whole reveal and strategy appears to have turned me into one. And I don't like it.

Rant over. Sad

Freshen up! You watched a Colgate advert. 100g.

Full Tummy. You ordered Pizza through your Xbox One Pizza Hut app. 500g.

You shared your Achievements on Facebook. 200g.

Yup, and I agree with the devaluation comment. It's not entirely unexpected, but it's starting to sound like the 'achievement' part of achievements could be scuppered by a cheap 'I was there' mechanic. Sad.

If it was used very sparingly it might be ok. Everyone should get an achievement for watching Game of Thrones cause it's ace Smile But they'll have to do it equally I'd have thought, 200 points for every episode bought.

There was some hope gamer scores could be a cross generation, life-long cool system. This tends to point it turning into a bloated, meaningless number people will ignore if it's filled with crap like - changed channel with hand gesture 100 points.
