| Despite some of you thinking it is a swear word, or thinking it is the cancer that is killing gaming, it is hard to deny that casual gaming is big business. HUGE business, in fact. The Wii and DS outsell all the other consoles every single month, and a large part of that is because they appeal to people who don't want to shoot space zombies whilst being insulted by 12 year olds all the time.
Perhaps it is time we who profess ourselves to be hardcore make more of an effort to sympathise with our new arrivals? After all, they are potentially fragbait in a year or so if we can encourage them to develop.
How can we achieve this goal? Well, the answer should be obvious :

Therefore, I suggest that we take some time on Fridays to play something a little less death and destructiony, and a little more easy going. And discuss it here. Who knows, if we learn enough we might even bring peace to the internet?
I shall start the ball rolling, and talk first about PopCap's Bejeweled.
It. Is. CRACK!
A game where all you ever do is swap the position of two gems to try and put three of the same colour together. That is literally as deep as it ever gets. Sometimes you can make a 4, and once in a while you get the opportunity to match 5. Both of these lead to good things, and I recommend you play the game yourself to see what these things are. According to Universal Laws, any time 3 or more items of the same colour touch they instantly disappear, and Bejeweled follows this to the letter. Whatever you take from the playfield is replenished from above, and gravity fills in your gaps, thus leading to potential chain reactions.
The weird thing is, luck plays a HUGE part in the game. You can be perfect, but never get a chance to score big. Somehow, though, this random factor doesn't put you off playing. You seemingly live in the hopes that the next game will be a good one. And then you trundle off to bed at 4am...
Why is it so addictive? I am less in control than in many other games I play, and yet I don't dismiss it because of this. Tetris is random, but I have utter control from the first second where I place the pieces. In Bejeweled, if I need a blue and it doesn't send one, I am screwed. The Classic game even ends with the legend "No more moves", and yet still the desire is there to push it further.
Anyone else played this? What are your own thoughts on it? And, are there other games for next Friday? |

| Speak for your self. I completed Flower the other week. Plants Versus Zombies is next on the list. Iv done most of the Peggle games. i dont think any one thinks casual games are bad.
The gaming Plague is the Wii.
Any way im not going to do a wall of text review.

| I've never liked Bejewelled, and after reading your post I still don't understand why you like it :P The gulf between 'swap two random gems' and 'swap these gems so the columns fall in the right way making a massive combo' is just far too big.
Hexic is better tbh ;p |

| I've not played Bejewelled but I was addicted at one stage to HexicHD and Peggle. Bejewelled seems like a good game for the mobile while on the move. |

| And Steg is right on time with the shallow ironically non-ironic casual gaming trolling.
Don't you ever have anything meaningful to contribute? |

| Waggle Bejeweled? I'd be all for it. Rather that than the 'Press A for the next line of dialogue, Press A to choose a menu item, Press A to activate the next cut-scene' style of gaming to which you subscribe. |
