Extended Play Videos. Feedback?
You may have noticed we've started doing what we're calling "Extended Play" videos which are effectively walkthrough's of the first 10 minutes or so of a new release.

Here's todays which is for Deadliest Warrior (XBLA).

I just wanted to dip our toe in the water and see what you guys think of this style of video content? Liking Extended Play or would you prefer something else? Any and all feedback much appreciated.

I've really liked them so far. It's nice to watch the staff playing the games as well as talking about them and the Scott Pilgrim one got me really excited for the game. Keep up the good work and I look forward to future 'extended plays'.

I think it's a really good idea, especially for full retail games. I suppose it only becomes an issue when there are spoilers in the first moments of the game. Not all games would be suitable, but in principal I like it Smile

I find them a bit dull, don't really like the idea of watching someone I can't see play a game. I'd rather have more written opinion articles instead of numerous previews for each game, Top 10 X in Gaming and video content.

I like the idea. What would be good is. Before making a video. Maybe if us members could ask some questions and you air them over the video footage whilst playing? So, say for example. The controls of the game. Are they correctly mapped to the responding button? Dunno if that made any sense at all lol but if you get my drift then thats good. Laugh

I agree if it were the only thing available it wouldn't be much use to me. I think they supplement a review nicely, but if it were the only thing available it might as well just be a gameplay video.

They're more preview content than review content on the whole. We aim to get them up before the game is out rather than on the day of release or after.

Are you allowed to put them up for embargoed titles as they are strictly classed as previews? If so that would be a brilliant indication of how the game plays without you saying anything and, let's face it, a lot of the time a game is embargoed because the developer has no confidence in it.

As to feedback; I like them. I often search Youtube for videos just like this before I buy a game because seeing how the first 10 minutes or so of a game works really helps make my mind up.

I think it's great. You could, if you can, link them or integrate them into the preview or review sections of the site so the person reading could get a better understanding by watching these video's if they so choose to.

I think there's two ways in which people are going to watch this:
    1) Focus on the content because they're interested in the game.
    2) Half watch it in the background because they're half interested and the commentary makes for light entertainment.

Right now I'm watching the Deadliest Warriors Ex Play in the background while doing other stuff because I'm interested in how brilliantly terrible the game is, but not to the extent that It has my full attention. The commentary is very good for this kind of content as well, I might add.

When I watch the Giant Bomb quick looks it's always something I have in the background that never really gets my full attention unless it's a game I really care about. I think you'd benefit from accommodating for both of these viewing styles by scaling the video window down relative to your Web window, because 720p is pretty hard to watch in the background if you can't resize it.

As for the content itself, all I can really suggest is having some set talking points just in case the casual discussion doesn't work. Giant Bomb usually get away with this because those guys can make anything funny and Brad actually has the voice of a god. But I suppose the games that get an Ex Play will be chosen depending on how much you can talk about them Grin

It's a good feature, but acknowledge the different ways in which people are likely to watch it.
