Future 'Layton.'
Angry Have just read that any future 'Professor Layton' games will only be available on 3DS, NOT compatible with lite or DSi-XL. Anyone know how much truth there is in that? Seems pretty damned inconsiderate if true!?

Thats how you sell a new system you move your big name games over so people have to buy the new to continue playing their fav games.

Yeah, I know that's how 'business' works but this seems extreme since it's not been long since the DSi-XL was launched here. The way it's going it'll be only 6 months after the 3DS launch that Ninty announce a 3DS 2 with similar consequences!?

It's hardly incosiderate, if anything not taking advantage of the hardware available is inconsiderate. With a game like Layton I can imagine some puzzles that make use of the 3D will be included, that simply wouldn't work on the older console.

This is hardly a surprise, or an exception. There are, what, 4 Professor Layton games on DS? That should be enough for one system, and if you release to many then you'll reach the limitations of the system very easily, which leads into what Lee said about 3D being included in future versions. Buy a 3DS with Professor Layton and you'll be glad they made the jump.

It's interesting, though, that some consumers view 3DS as another iteration of the DS in the same way that Lite, DSi and XL were. Maybe it needed a new name? But then, it's very similar to DS in a lot of ways, and can still play DS games.

Why not at least make some sort of transition where the next Layton would work on both systems rather than leave DSi/XL users out in the cold? People ( generally I'm guessing? ) can't afford to keep buying consoles like there's no tomorrow!? @ woffls. 3 DS Layton games mate as far as I'm aware. Sorry to 'pick holes.' Though there is the 'Eternal diva' movie.

There was a fourth released only in Japan. It's called the Specter's Flute and was apparently released in 2009 =\ Not quite sure why we don't have it, or if we ever will.

Making 3DS Layton work on DS would negate the advantages of 3DS Layton, i.e. 3D puzzles. Generally I think it's slightly unreasonable to expect 3DS games to work on DS. Partly for marketing purposes from Nintendo's perspective, but also because if we made 'next gen' games that worked on predecessors, we wouldn't make any progress.

I'm sure though mate, there's loads of tech out there we'd all like to take advantage of ( 3D telly without glasses? ) but it needs to be introduced gradually so joe public has a chance of being able to afford to buy it? Ninty seem to be releasing new ( at least hand-helds. ) consoles far more often than Sony or Microsoft? ( That was a bit 'waffly'. Sorry! )

My point really was that this time round there has been so little time between the DSi-XL and the 3DS it smacks of cashing-in on a massive scale. Folks that buy the 3DS will they find they have an out-of-date console come the Autumn? Making the point the 3DS is a new console seperate from the DSi/XL is fine. Really, Ninty shouldn't have bothered with the XL?

Sony have released 4 iterations of the PSP, if I'm not mistaken. Let's not forget how many SKU's of the Xbox 360 and PS3 have been released. Even just a different sized hard drive is an 'iteration'.

Arguably the DS iterations are more meaningful, but let's not forget that they are entirely optional and don't impact how you play DS games. DSi splintered the market very slightly, but the exclusive content was minimal.

The XL had a purpose, and Nintendo didn't market it as a replacement, just an addition to the line up. This is evident in how you can still buy a DSi OR an XL, but not a DS Lite or DS Original. The latter two were replaced by DSi, but DSi was not replaced by XL.

Whether Nintendo should have bothered releasing it or not is somewhat irrelevant. It didn't prevent them from doing anything else, and they weren't forcing people to buy it, so I don't see what the problem is.
