What Classifies As A Console?
I'm sure everyone is waiting with bated breath for the inevitable announcement of new consoles. Recently, a lot fo other companies are trying to get into the console game.

There has been a heightened amount of hardware releases/announcements since the beginning of last year: Ouya, 3DS, Vita, Steambox/Piston, Tablets, Shield, etc. which, for me, has blurred the line for what classifies as a console these days.

If you go by the basic definition of a system that connects to your TV to play games, then that doesn't quite make sense. Xbox has progressed to the point where it's a system that is capable of doing a ton of more things than simply play games, a full blown multimedia system, so to speak. And what with these new handhelds like Nvidia's Shield and Razor's Edge coming out that can be connected to your TV while at the same time allowing portability, I'm a tad bit confused as to what counts as a console and what doesn't?

What do you guys think? What classifies a device as a console, and where do you see consoles going/becoming in the future?

But there are apps that allow you to use it as a "remote" for your TV (or perhaps even a controller) out there, surely?

Well, there's a difference between what should be classified as a console. No idea.

And what I think of as a console. 3DS - console, iphone - not a console. At least in my head.

But if you're going by that, then an Xbox shouldn't be a console either, since it does more than just play games, right?

There are plenty of more "higher quality" games on the iPhone than ones i've seen on the 3DS, which at least puts it on par as far as gaming quality goes for the two devices, yeah?

I haven't given it much thought to be honest, but nah, it would be the other way round. If it's primary function isn't games then it's not really a console. Not that it cann't have multiple other functions. But then we are living in a rapidly evolving world where this view could be gone in no time.

Well since FM has pretty much summed up the exact definitions that I would have used and wrapped up all possibilities, I'd say that's conversation over! Grin

Well I think it's getting to the point mind where the primary purpose of a console is not to play games but films, ads and music as well.
A console needs to everything which a PC can also do more...so a PC is a console+ :P

I'd still say they were secondary, even if still important. It's the first thing you look for when buying a console (not in comparing one to another, just in buying any console full stop).

A primary purpose is something you can't take away without the device losing its main focus.
