Your Survival Guide to Christmas Gaming
Major edit: have moved the YouTubes behind Spoiler Tags - we're now a mobile friendly thread!

Much as I'm loathe to start a thread with Christmas in the title, we're gamers, for us Christmas starts now and we get bombarded with titles right up until Santa gets stuck in our chimneys and puts an end to the deluge. The deluge looks a bit like this:

Today:
Medal of Honor: Warfighter
Forza Horizon
Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition

Tip: This time of year you need to chill with a relaxing game, Forza Horizon is the obvious bet, the other two will have you pulling your hair out as well as the hair of anything else nearby.

October 31st
Assassin's Creed III

Note the clever tactic of avoiding the avalanche of games by releasing on a Wednesday and the last day of the month, which is a payday for a lot of employees. Publishers everywhere take note.

Tip: After Assassin's Creed, Assassin's Creed 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood and Assassin's Creed Revelations you're probably a bit Assassined Out and can wait a bit longer, so you've more time to enjoy Forza Horizon. Pick it up in the sales later.

November 2nd
Football Manager 2013 (PC)
Halo 4
WWE 13
Need for Speed Most Wanted

I included FM 2013 just for Tom (as if he'd forget). Otherwise you can carry on playing Forza Horizon because NFS:MW is the same thing, basically, you can pick that up in the sales with Assassin's Creed 3, probably in a 2 for £25 deal. You obviously remembered to enter Videogamer.com's Halo 4 competition so, you know, don't worry about it, that's a cert.

November 9th
Nothing to see here, move on.

November 13th
Call of Duty: Black Ops II

Note the clever tactic of releasing on an unluckily numbered day, mid-week, mid-month, when you've got no cash but a nice title like Warfighter to trade in for it because you weren't listening earlier. This one's up to you but personally after playing BLOPs 1 I think I'd rather eat my Borderlands 2 disc with some mayonnaise than spend a penny on BLOPs 2. Your call.

November 16th
Wonderbook of Spells (PS3)

Tip: Grab your existing copy of Lego Harry Potter Years 1-4 (PS3) and any old book, then play the game with the book open at your feet and turn pages randomly. Same effect and about £24.99 cheaper.

November 20th
Hitman Absolution

From what I've seen of it so far, I'll still be happily playing Forza Horizon and not worrying about it. Note the clever tactic of releasing it two days before my birthday, though.

I just realised that anyone reading this without a 360 to hand is a bit out of luck, time to rectify that!

November 23rd
Lego Lord of the Rings
PS All Stars Battle Royale

So there you have it, a use for the PS3, unfortunately they'll be fun for 5 minutes, 10 minutes if you bought them both, because you've been there done that already in 100s of other similar games.

November 30th
Far Cry 3

Awesome. If you've taken my advice so far you'll only have blown £40 on Forza Horizon and are getting a bit tired of it whilst keeping an eye out for Halo 4 in the post from VG Towers. So you now have no excuse not to grab what is easily the most anticipated game this holiday season. In fact you could splash out on the full Insane Edition with all that you've saved!

There's also the small matter now of Nintendo, I think they might have some new hardware out on this day, so now's the time to get that "I WANT A WII U" tattoo on your forehead to make sure everyone knows what to get you for Chrimbo.

If you've got space to spare you can even request New Super Mario Bros above one eyebrow, Nintendoland above the other and - pro tip - Rise of the Guardians across and between your knuckles, but trust me, that's gonna hurt. However, my tattoist managed to ink it onto a certain part of my body so that when girls ask what R.O.T.G. stands for I get excited and show them.

Ho Ho Ho!

So, that's basically it. Either I missed something or it's too niche to include (soz RTS fans, Marvel fans etc.,) or nobody wants to release anything in December. Probably wise. I hope this helped a little, or at least entertained Smile Personally I'm sticking to the plan and spending the next few days re-editing all this to find working YouTube links.

I find this interesting. I was expecting to have a similar situation to last where big game after big game was coming out all the time between September and late December, and that some of the not so safe bets would be lost.

This year not so much, Borderlands 2 came out quite early, and Resident evil 6 and MoH:WF are both disappointing. COD, FIFA, AC3 and Halo really the only other big safe options left. Leaving the market more open to games like dishonoured, XCom, and soon Hitman and Farcry, games which in previous years would of been buried, under a mountain of titles.

I think I've got most of it covered for the Christmas period. Just need to get Halo and I should be ok. Everything else can come in the New Year. It helps that I've got a new determination to finish a few of my backlog games as well.

The low number of titles surprised me too! When I'd finished writing this up I double checked to make sure I hadn't missed a blockbuster or interesting-looking release (I was using Amazon's release dates).

I bet I've missed some, so I can always edit them in later, but it's pretty indicative that we're coming towards the end of this generation. Having said that, early 2013 is starting to look a bit packed around Feb/March, so I might have to make this a quarterly series.

You can guarantee that nearly half of those Q1 releases in 2013 will get pushed back and will probably end up being Q4 releases.
