What movie[s] have you seen recently?
I had a look for a general movie discussion topic, but couldn't see one, so I hope this isn't a duplicate.

Here's what I have seen recently:

Kenny - an Austrailian movie about an everyday nice guy, and his job (of which no-one approves) of cleaning toilets. It's filmed like a 'mockumentary', a la The Office or Spinal Tap. It's really about Kenny's job and the people in his life. A nice film which is definitely worth seeing and has more than a few funny moments. 8/10

Infernal Affairs
- a superb Hong Kong movie about a police mole in a Triad gang and a Triad mole in the police department. As the two moles get closer to being discovered and finding out each other's identities, their cover - and lives in general - begin to fall apart. A really superb crime thriller which is better than pretty much any other film in the genre I can think of (with the exception of Training Day). Utterly superb, you must watch this movie. 9/10

Eagle vs. Shark - a gentle and funny New Zealand film about a geeky but sweet girl and her infatuation for a self-obsessed uber-geek called Jarrod. It's not quite your usual rom-com format - boy meets girl / they have mediocre sex / boy takes girl on road trip so he can beat up a former school bully / boy neglects girl / girl leaves / boy realises how much he took girl for granted. A nice, sweet film with some good lines in it, you'll like this if you like Napoleon Dynamite. 8/10

X-Men 2 - I watched most of this on TV last night. Just a great film with some superb action scenes (the intro is exceptional, as is Stryker's assault on Xavier's mansion), a good plot and very well-judged pacing. Definitely one of the best comic book movies. 9/10Last edited on Sun 8 March 2009 by FantasyMeister

Cas- About a well known football hoolligan from the 80's, I believe the movie is converted from one of the books he wrote about his experiences with the Intercity Firm. Was decent enough but I feel this type of film has been done enough by the likes of rise of the footsoldier, football factory and green street. Speaking of which theres a god awful sequel to green street on the way the trailer is horrible.

The mist- adaption of a Stephen King short story. Basically a town has a storm one night and a mist starts to creep down from the mountains. It just so happens that in the mountains theres a military base where they have been doing experiments. While shopping at the local supermarket a warning goes up as the mist engulfs the town and to the horror of everyone theres something in the mist. Sounds very clichéd it is clichéd but it also works very well. It isn't scary but does a good job of setting atmosphere and anticipation. Also a great ending which you wouldn't expect from a horror film.

The strangers- Now this one I didn't really like at all, for me it didn't offer anything original to the formuliac horror film. Couple staying at the guys parents weekend hideaway home. A creepy girl knocks on door, later knocks again etc. The terror increases from there.

Zak and Miri Make a Porno - after an enthusiastic reccomendation by LSS Chrome. It's quite a good laugh, with some sex (always a plus ^^) with a better story than it sounds :P

The Rocker - Awesome movie Grin Especially if you like rock or metal music, really funny with an awesome (yet slightly predictable ending) storyline.

Rush Hour 1 & 2 & 3 - Cop from the East meets loud mouth cop from the West. Jackie Chan & Chris Tucker bring humour and kick ass fighting scenes and great plots as well. I have all the Jackie Chan movies and there great especially Armour Of God and the Drunken Master 1 & 2.

Hard Boiled with Chow Yun Fat directed by John Woo so you will know that every gun fight there is going to be brillant. Inspector Tequila is trying to nail down this gang for very bad deeds indeed. It all starts from a teahouse with undercover cops working as waiters and of course Chow Yun Fat and his partner as customers. Massive gun fight starts within seconds and Tequila's partner gets killed and Tequila kills the man who did it.

Its a brillant film and need to be watched before you die! The main plot of this story is getting Johnny Wong a so called bad ass gangster.

Lol Tongue I never saw the emotional side to it coming.

I saw half of Sex Drive recently, didn't manage to get to see the other half (don't ask.) If anyone has seen this, would they recommend?

I've been meaning to see that for a while, but never got around to it. I'll have to make sure the missus has put it on our Lovefilm rental list.

I watched War of the Worlds (2005) last night. Fairly poor film, but I'm off to bed now so I'll talk about it another time.

War Of The Worlds (2005) - I didn't think much of it. I found Tom Cruise and his children to be terrifically annoying; particularly his daughter who just seemed too mature and was grossly over-acting. The special effects were obviously superb, but at the same time I felt it lacked the scale of the original; we never get too see the vast devastation the aliens cause (something like visiting a half-demolished, abandoned city would have been pretty cool). I know it was supposed to be more about the human relationship fallout from the attack, but at the same time this lead to annoyances (like how the Hell did his son survive being caught in a huge explosion then make his way hundreds of miles to his mother's house?!). We don't really even have any explanation as to how the aliens die - it just says humans have the natural immunity to live here but the invaders don't, and that's it - fini.

I dunno, pretty weak and not a patch on the original. I still think the last truly great film Spielberg made was Jurassic Park. Or maybe Schindler's List - was that more recent? I haven't seen it anyway.Last edited on Mon 26 January 2009 by Triggerhappytel

Agree with you on War of the Worlds, especially the ending, it just stopped and left me thinking 'is that it?'.

I watched Transporter 2 last night which was decent, better than the original. A couple of completely ridiculous moments of action though e.g. a barrel roll in the car which when all factors are timed perfectly can lead to a bomb being removed from the bottom of your car using the dangling hook from the crane just in the nick of time. How he knew the exact speed to make sure the car was high enough for the hook and the underside of the car would be up at the right time and that the hook would be right in line with the small bomb I'll never know.

If I was a young teenager I'd have probably thought that bit was excellent but in reality it lead to a bit of a "oh come on" outburst.

Wall-E - Do EVERYTHING in your power to see this. Absolutely the best movie of last year. Or most years, for that matter. Disney Pixar films are generally excellent, but this one even manages to surpass Finding Nemo. The first 45 minutes or so don't even have any dialogue, which is a brave move. The second half of the movie reverts to more traditional fare, but contains a level of satire I don't think I have witnessed in a Disney movie before. It is truly thought-provoking stuff, not to mention moving. All of this is topped off by the sheer beauty. A simply stunning movie.
